Lately, I’ve been having more conversations with young clients in Greater Vancouver who are feeling the weight of Canada’s ongoing affordability challenges. Even as we move through the second half of 2026, many younger buyers tell me homeownership seems further out of reach than ever. Some are choosing to make the most of their money through travel and new experiences—what’s been called ‘doom spending’—because saving for a downpayment feels overwhelming or even futile. Family support continues to be a common way to help bridge the gap, and I always encourage honest, open discussions about it; there’s nothing to be embarrassed about when navigating such a big decision. While housing market activity remains subdued in many parts of Canada, it’s often debt servicing—not just the initial downpayment—that stands out as the real barrier. Still, I’ve seen entry-level homes in our region spark strong competition, showing just how much demand and determination are out there. Despite the hurdles, I continue to believe—and advise my clients—that homeownership remains a meaningful long-term goal. My role is to help you understand the landscape and make the best decisions for your future in this evolving market.
